Stuck on the plane
What happens when you are stuck at the terminal on the plane for hours?
I left New York Times Square at 730ish am to catch a 1015am flight to Oakland California with a transit in Chicago. The departure from NY was delayed so as soon as I got off at the Chicago airport I walked as fast as I can not dallying not wanting to miss my check-in. Good grief, I just had enough time and then the boarding was delayed at Chicago airport to Oakland California.
On board all buckled-up they announced that we are getting ready for take-off but then we didn't for at least an hour and a half an announcement followed thanking us for our patience. They offered everyone a chance to get-off the plane to grab lunch and stretch. I was weary and reluctant to get-off. As the same scenario happened to me on my way to NY from Oakland. Flashbacks of getting-off, grabbing a meal, coming back and the plane has taken-off without me and waiting for another 6 hours at the airport for the next flight I can "possibily" take. I didn't want a repeat of hanging-out at the airport wasting a lot of time.
I was hungry and took the chance cautiously watching fellow passengers. We all got back-in on the plane when the pilot announced "we are taking-off" one of the kids on the plane said to the stewardess with an excited voice "we are going to fly! we are going to fly!". A few hours later we were still in Chicago airport. Our Oakland airport scheduled arrival of 430pm was eventually moved to 9pm. During the time of waiting I read, journalled, sketched, calculated cash flow, listed my long term plans, talked to my seatmates, learnt something about retirement plans, being a real estate broker, ate, drank, stretched, edited my photos till laptop ran out of battery, got bored so took out my camera and started taking photos on the plane from my seat's angle. I had a great trip though and arriving safely was great. I am now back and learning that this is part of the American life. It can be a dreadful thought knowing that these "delays" can happen again on my next flight. Missing appointed meetings, arrangements with people on the other end, plans, etc.
I think the airport needs to do something about planning air traffic well. For the sake of people's time, airline money, efficiency, business and effectivity.
Since the development and change may not happen over night. I found this link on things-to-do-on-long-plane-rides.
